New Zealand’s West Coast is one of the country’s most picturesque – and untouched – regions. And a recent development in the historically significant town of Westport offers buyers the chance to buy some of the best priced new homes on 600 square metres in the country.

Located near an estuary, the development is in a very handy location: close to local schools, hospital and the township. These properties are great for a first home, holiday home, or investment; and the plans include land and house on pile foundations. (Landscaping, fences, paths, terraces, drive and garage are not included).

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes with land are selling for $350,000; with the three-bedroom at $450,000.

Rental Figures

In today’s market (and at the date of appraisal) it was envisaged weekly rental for the two-bedroom homes would be in the vicinity of $380-$400 (unfurnished), or $400-$450 (furnished).

The three-bedroom house was estimated to be $425-$450 a week (unfurnished), or $450-$500 (furnished).(This does not purport to be a valuation, but merely a guide of the current market trends, and should be treated as such).

It is important to note that in the 2021 floods, none of the existing homes in this subdivision were flooded. Local authority rules stipulate that new houses have a freeboard level and comply with Buller District Council requirements. The government has also approved funding for a flood wall in the area.

The Franz is a classic gable dwelling with bedroom and living areas separated by an entry void.
The ‘Franz’ floorplan is 67m2.

Business Growth

Buller District has many business growth opportunities in the fields of minerals, gold, agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing. Until the Ukraine war this area had the highest GDP growth of any town in New Zealand.

Westport enjoys a warm temperate marine climate with (on average) 1,900 sunshine hours a year. The district is known for its mind-boggling range of adventure and recreation facilities. Wild and tranquil rivers, dramatic seascapes, and impressive wilderness are all close at hand.

Mountain biking, four-wheel driving and hiking trails abound, and there is much of historical interest to explore. The terrain ranges from easy to challenging, and the scenery is beautiful.

There are many other leisure opportunities: sea and river fishing, exploring historic towns and mining spots, and a nearby seal colony at Cape Foulwind.
